Global CPD: Are We Really Ready to Work Across Borders? Myths, Assumptions, and the Global CPD Literacy Gap

Session Description

Providing education outside of your home country requires much more than repurposing a successful domestic program, using AI to develop translated subtitles, securing faculty for a satellite symposium at an international conference, or making online content available to learners around the world.

In this interactive session, we will examine common myths and misperceptions that influence CPD delivered across international, professional, and cultural boundaries and borders. Participants will be tasked to consider what it means to be a genuinely global CPD provider, including how to identify and interact with the appropriate stakeholders.

The session will also challenge the tendency to treat “cultural competence” as the primary solution to global educational challenges. Culture matters, but it is only one part of a much larger context. Through practical examples, provocative questions, and audience discussion, participants will assess their own level of Global CPD Literacy and consider how to move from international distribution toward locally informed educational design, delivery, and evaluation.  

Learning Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

1.Differentiate international educational reach from locally informed global CPD practice.

2. Identify assumptions that can impact the relevance, accessibility, and potential impact of CPD delivered outside a provider's home country.

3. Examine how local context should influence CPD planning. 

4. Apply questions that help determine whether an international CPD activity is being designed for local learners or primarily for the convenience of the provider, supporter, or faculty.
