From the Inside Out: Creating Success by Creating Space
So often in our professional lives we spend an exorbitant amount of time and effort on creating success and improving our organizations from an external perspective. We are aware of what we do and how we do it, but we are usually unaware of the inner place from which we operate. This can be a critical blind spot in professional development and quality improvement. Turning inward and enhancing our emotional intelligence can lead to dramatic shifts in how we interact with others and generate success.
Emotional Intelligence (EI), refers to the ability to perceive, facilitate, understand and regulate one's and other's emotions. The key elements of EI are self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills. It has been argued that EI is more important than any other skill when it comes to leadership and success. Improving our EI can improve our response to stress, help us overcome challenges, enhance our creativity, and develop meaningful relationships with our colleagues.
During this session, attendees will learn about the principles of EI and how they can be used effectively to improve how we navigate challenges and engage with others. Participants will also have an opportunity to reflect on their self-care inventory and identify areas where they would like to create more space for themselves. Finally, the presenter will lead participants through some short, simple techniques (e.g., breathing exercises, listening exercises) for reducing stress and improving well-being at any moment. Let’s take a well-deserved break from the hustle and the grind and learn how to create success from the inside out.
Donna Gabriel is Sr. Director of US/Global Education at Med-IQ. She is also a PhD candidate, currently completing her dissertation in the area of Mind-Body Medicine with a specialization in Mindful Leadership in Healthcare (expected completion in December 2023). Additionally, she is certified by Saybrook University in Mindfulness Applications.
