A Means to an End: Achieving Patient Satisfaction Through Culturally Sensitive Communication

Cultural sensitivity is one of our most important skills in a globalizing world of medical education. The speakers an Egyptian living in Qatar and a Swiss working around the globe provide insight into the process of recognizing the importance of cultural diverse situations and challenges when working as healthcare teams and its impact on patient outcomes and satisfaction.

The workshop will start with a self-assessment of the participants' own cultural sensitivity. The learning lab will showcase tactics and processes creating and working with culturally diverse teams including patients and their families in different environments. Participants then will work in small groups to apply the process step by step to their own setting. Challenges will be discussed and solutions to address such challenges will be developed as take-home messages for learners. The presenters as a panel will provide then provide feedback and share their own experiences.

  • Recognize the importance of sensitive communication in culturally diverse situations and challenges when working as healthcare teams and their impact on patient outcomes.
  • Address culturally sensitive challenges in communication with patients and their families.

In small groups, participants will explore how to collaborate in the area of life-long learning, considering the core values of inclusivity, credibility, integrity, and transparency as described in the GAME vision and mission statement, above. Three topics were investigated, including 1) how to incorporate the core value of transparency into collaboration, 2) barriers that inhibit collaboration across stakeholders, and 3) resources needed for collaboration in lifelong learning. The presenters and learners will, together, explore these topics and brainstorm solutions that can be utilized as best practices in CME/CPD over the next 10 years.
